African Explorers

The whole school took part in a cultural week and Reception explored the continent of Africa. Come and take a look at what we have been up to.

We have really enjoyed learning all about Africa.

We found out that coconut milk is used a lot in African cooking. We were lucky enough to see a real coconut, taste the milk and then use the coconut flesh to make delicious cakes.

We also spent time making our very own African Drums using cups and masking tape. We then painted them. They made very good instruments.

We spent time looking at African Art, especially African Cave Drawings. We were able to create our own using sandpaper and crayons.

We have also based our literacy and numeracy lessons around Africa. In literacy we looked at African Animals and thought of words to describe them. In numeracy we looked at African Houses and created our own symmetrical drawings of mud huts. We used Google Earth to look at the continent of Africa and looked closely at the desert, the savannas and the rainforests and what animals lived there.
