Learning about Animation at Heworth C.L.C.
The whole class walked to Heworth City Learning College on Wednesday, 6th February, to learn how to create animations.
In the morning, everyone enjoyed using '2 Simple Animation', a program we do not have at White Mere, to create short sequences, with very many images needed to form each second of screen activity.
For taking part, the school very gratefully received a new 'Digital Blue' camera and software to enable us to continue similar work at school.
In the afternoon, four members of the class were asked to stay to work on animations using model figures. Here they are, hard at work:

Literacy- Writing
Why I Like My Laptop
I like my laptop because it is a great way to learn things. It is educational and fun. I especially like going on the games like Kar2ouche after I have finished my work. I think I will improve on my writing on the computer with my laptop. In future I would like to go on the other programmes on the laptop.

What I like about Year 5 in White Mere is all the interesting and educational trips. We have had many visitors and the mayor has come to our school to plant some trees with our school council members. Also, Literacy and Numeracy lessons are packed with great information.
Furthermore, we learn new things every day in year five, such as facts about the Islam religion in R.E. There are wonderful displays to make our classroom bright and cheerful and one of our displays is about world war two, which we have been learning about in our history lessons.
We have also taken part in the skipping festival and we have been to Heworth CLC to do Lego Robotics.
Some of our class are on the Kwik Cricket team and a coach comes to P.E. to help us learn cricket skills.
I like Year five because we have lots of visitors and trips. Also I think the staff are good because they organize lots of activities and games for us. I like the school because it has clubs after school. Lately we have got laptops which we use for our lessons. I think it will boost our learning because it has lots of fun activities for our education. We have been making storyboards using Kartouche – it’s brilliant.

Multi-skills event for Y5 at Heworth Grange
ATHLETICS
In February some children from Year Five went to Heworth Grange Comprehensive for an athletics event where they competed with children from other local schools.
There was a range of track and field events. The track events included a one lap sprint, a four lap run, a sprint with hurdles and a relay. The field events included speed bouncing, long jump, chest push and javelin. Although White Mere did not win some of the children won their events – Clare and Thomas won the four lap race, Nathan won the speed bounce and Thomas won the long jump. Clare, Thomas, Nathan and Cameron were also chosen to go to an athletics event at Gateshead Stadium as part of the Heworth cluster schools team.

Problem-solving is a very important skill !
Here Paul and Lewis work out their solutions.
PROBLEM SOLVING
Improving our problem solving skills is one of our targets in numeracy. Recently we have been problem solving with 2D and 3D shapes. Some children had to work out how to create a net for an open cube with a line all the way around the top of the cube, while others had to visualise how many multi-link cubes were used to make the shapes in some pictures. We had great fun completing these tasks!

'Centre for Life' Visit
We really enjoyed our day...a mixture of work and play!
In November, we visited the 'Centre for Life' in Newcastle to find out more about our science topic ‘Changing State’. We found out more about evaporation, condensation, melting, freezing and boiling.
After lunch, we had a fabulous time ice-skating. Then we had some delicious hot chocolate and a giant cookie.
We finished the day with a trip on the crazy motion ride.
Work!
In the science lab we had to work out how to ‘stick’ some string to ice and we found out how snow is formed.
